Please note this product requires a written prescription.
Metacam is an oral suspension containing the active ingredient Meloxicam. The yellowish suspension is in the form of a tasty liquid, avoiding the need to give tablets.
Metacam for dogs is available as a 10ml, 32ml, 100ml or 180ml bottle. Please note the provided syringe doses up to 35kg.
Metacam 1.5mg/ml oral suspension for dogs is a Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug (NSAID), which is used to help manage arthritis in dogs as well as acting as a pain relief for those who suffer from chronic (long-term) or acute (short-term) musculo-skeletal disorders such as sprained muscles.
Metacam is also used in a number of other diseases and illnesses to alleviate inflammation and reduce any pain that your dog is suffering from. It is often used as a post-operative pain relief to help reduce any pain and discomfort.
A syringe is provided to dose your dog in kilograms according to its bodyweight. Metacam is usually given once daily and an improvement is normally seen in the dog 3-4 days after starting treatment.
Ideally, Metacam should be used alongside a joint supplement that contains glucosamine to further help support the joints and the cartilage. All of our joint supplements can be found in the Joint Supplement section of our website.
Metacam is also available as 1mg chewable tablets, 2.5mg chewable tablets, an injectable solution for pigs, cattle and horses, a suspension for horses and a suspension for cats experiencing pain and inflammation.
Metacam Solution for dogs is often prescribed off label for use in rabbits to alleviate pain.
Special Instructions & Dose
Do not use Metacam for dogs in pregnant or lactating bitches, dogs less than 6 weeks old, or dogs suffering from gastrointestinal disorders, impaired kidney, heart or liver function.
Avoid use in any dehydrated, hypovolaemic or hypotensive animal, as there is a potential risk of renal toxicity.
This product for dogs should not be used in cats as it is not suitable for use in this species. In cats, Metacam 0.5 mg/ml oral suspension for cats should be used.
Typical adverse reactions of NSAIDs such as loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhoea, faecal occult blood, lethargy and renal failure have occasionally been reported. In very rare cases haemorrhagic diarrhoea, haematemesis, gastrointestinal ulceration and elevated liver enzymes have been reported.
These side effects occur generally within the first treatment week and are in most cases transient and disappear following termination of the treatment but in very rare cases may be serious or fatal.
If adverse reactions occur, treatment should be discontinued and the advice of a veterinarian should be sought.
Ensure you have weighed your dog accurately, especially if small, to ensure accurate dosing of Metacam.
It is available in

Active IngredientsMeloxicam - which belongs to a class of medicines called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Meloxicam acts by blocking an enzyme called cyclooxygenase which is involved in the production of prostaglandins. As prostaglandins are substances that trigger inflammation, pain, exudation (fluid that leaks out of blood vessels during an inflammation) and fever, meloxicam reduces these signs of disease.
The suspension should be administered orally, either mixed with food or directly into the mouth using either the drop dispenser of the bottle (for very small dog breeds) or the measuring syringe provided in the box. Full instructions on the use of Metacam for dogs are included.
