How Does Advantage Spot-On Flea Treatment Work?
Advantage is a topical spot-on flea treatment designed to kill fleas on cats, dogs, rabbits and ferrets within 24 hours. The active ingredient in Advantage products is Imidacloprid, an insect neurotoxin that works by interfering with transmission in the flea's nervous system, causing paralysis and, ultimately, death.
Mammals, such as your pet, have a different type of nervous system to fleas, and so Advantage flea treatment is perfectly safe for use and will not harm your pet. Advantage Spot-On is even safe for use on puppies and kittens 8 weeks and older. Advantage is suitable for use on most pets, including cats, rabbits and all dog breeds up to 40kg.
How Do You Apply Advantage Spot-On Flea Treatment?
In order for Advantage Spot-On to work, the dosage must be applied directly to undamaged skin. To avoid licking, it’s best to apply the dose to a spot where your pet cannot reach. Also, if you are treating more than one pet in your household, ensure they cannot groom each other following the applications of the flea treatment.
Application of Advantage flea treatment is fairly simple, here’s how to apply Advantage to your pets:
Applying Advantage Spot-On to Cats and Rabbits
To apply Advantage spot-on to cats and rabbits, part the hair on the back of your pet’s neck at the base of the skull until the skin is visible. Next, place the tip of the tube on the skin and squeeze firmly several times to empty the contents directly onto the skin.
Applying Advantage Spot-On to Dogs
With the dog in a standing position, part the coat between the shoulder blades until the skin is visible. Place the tip of the tube of Advantage on the skin and squeeze firmly several times to empty the contents directly onto the skin.
For larger dogs, ensure they are standing to make applying Advantage easier. The entire contents of the tube should be applied evenly to 3 or 4 spots all located at different application sites along the dog's back from the shoulder to the base of the tail. At each spot, part the coat until the skin is visible. Place the tip of the tube on the skin and gently squeeze the tube to expel a portion of its contents directly onto the skin. Do not apply an excessive amount of solution to any one spot, as that could cause some of the product to run down the animal's side.

Does Advantage Kill Fleas Immediately?
Advantage flea treatment kills all fleas on your pet within one day of application. Following this, Advantage also offers protection from reinfection for up to 4 weeks on dogs, up to 3 weeks on cats, and up to one week on rabbits.
Can Advantage Irritate my Pet’s Skin?
Advantage spot-on flea treatment should not cause irritation to your pet’s skin as it does not require the fleas to bite your pet in order to administer a lethal dose. Advantage products can even be used as part of a treatment strategy for Flea Allergy Dermatitis (FAD) in cats and dogs, where this has been previously diagnosed by a veterinary surgeon.
How Often Can I Apply Advantage Spot-On to my Pet?
Advantage flea treatment should be applied to your pet every four weeks to help prevent reinfestation and break the flea life cycle. Should your pet need another application before four weeks, ensure you do not treat them more frequently than weekly.
Is Advantage Spot-On Safe to Use on Puppies and Kittens?
Advantage Spot-On is safe for use on both puppies and kittens over the age of 8 weeks. Advantage is also safe for use on nursing pets and the protection will be passed onto the offspring.
