The European Commission has recently issued a new regulation affecting Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland preventing usage of E171 (an additive containing titanium dioxide) that will come into force in June 20, 2022. After reviewing the evidence, the UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) and Food Standards Scotland (FSS) did not identify any safety concerns and will not follow the European Union in banning titanium dioxide as a food additive at this time. This additive is widely used in human pharmaceutical as well as animal nutrition products and has been for many years.
This new regulation affects our brand Zylkene® since E171 is present in the capsule ‘shell’, however E171 is not present in the powder.
In response to this new EC regulation, Vetoquinol have issued updated guidance to instruct pet owners to open the capsule and sprinkle the powder onto the food or on a treat. This clear guidance on how to administer Zylkene® should address any safety concern.
Unfortunately, we are unable to continue supplying the Zylkene® 20 pack to Northern Ireland customers until further notice as this packaging/labeling has not been changed.
Zylkene can be used both short term or longer term, dependent on the source of stress. Stress in the short term may include a long journey, a stay at a kennels or cattery, or loud fireworks.
Longer term causes of stress include moving house or a new pet or new baby being introduced to the home.Zylkene is a food supplement made from a protein similar to that found in the mothers milk. The active ingredient in it is a peptide (a simple protein molecule) which is able to bind temporarily to certain receptors in the brain to encourage a sense of calmness.
Capsules are given once a day and are easy to give: they can be given whole or opened and sprinkled onto food (either wet or dry food). They taste milky, so are highly palatable and most animals take them well. Zylkene capsules are free of preservatives, hypoallergenic and lactose free.
If the capsules are being given short term (such as around fireworks season) then capsules should begin to be administered 1-2 days before the predicted stressful event or change to their environment. Long term it is advised that Zylkene are given daily for a month before reassessing the animals behaviour and continuing treatment afterwards if needed.
