Metacam 2.5mg chewable tablets for dogs is a Non-Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drug (NSAID), which is used to help manage arthritis in dogs as well as acting as a pain relief for those who suffer from chronic (long-term) or acute (short-term) musculo-skeletal disorders such as sprained muscles. Metacam 2.5mg chewable tablets are also used in a number of other diseases and illnesses to alleviate inflammation and reduce any pain that your dog is suffering from. It is often used as a post-operative pain relief to help reduce any pain and discomfort.

Each Metacam 2.5mg tablet contains 2.5mg of the active ingredient Meloxicam. Metacam tablets are easy to give and should be administered with food (unless otherwise advised by your veterinary surgeon). Metacam 2.5mg tablets are flavoured so your dog may take the tablet willingly without having to hide it in their food. The tablets are easily divisible to enable precision dosing calculated by bodyweight. Metacam is usually given once daily and an improvement is normally seen in the dog 3-4 days after starting treatment.

Ideally, Metacam 2.5mg tablets should be used alongside a Joint Supplement that contains glucosamine to further help support the joints and the cartilage.

All of our Joint Supplements can be found in the Joint Supplement section of our website.

Metacam is available in the following forms; oral suspension for dogs, 1mg chewable tablets, 2.5mg chewable tablets, an injectable solution for pigs, cattle and horses, a suspension for horses and a suspension for cats experiencing pain and inflammation.

Metacam Solution for dogs is often prescribed ‘off label’ for use in rabbits to alleviate pain.

Do not use Metacam for dogs in pregnant or lactating bitches, dogs less than 6 weeks old, or dogs suffering from gastrointestinal disorders, impaired kidney, heart or liver function.

Avoid use in any dehydrated, hypovolaemic or hypotensive animal, as there is a potential risk of renal toxicity.

This product for dogs should not be used in cats as it is not suitable for use in this species. In cats, Metacam 0.5 mg/ml oral suspension for cats should be used.

Typical adverse reactions of NSAIDs such as loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhoea, faecal occult blood, lethargy and renal failure have occasionally been reported. In very rare cases haemorrhagic diarrhoea, haematemesis, gastrointestinal ulceration and elevated liver enzymes have been reported.

These side effects occur generally within the first treatment week and are in most cases transient and disappear following termination of the treatment but in very rare cases may be serious or fatal.

If adverse reactions occur, treatment should be discontinued and the advice of a veterinarian should be sought.

Ensure you have weighed your dog accurately, especially if small, to ensure accurate dosing of Metacam.
