9. Written Prescriptions

  • How do I get a written prescription
    • You need to ask your vet to complete and sign a prescription form that you have downloaded from our site or to complete one of his own prescription forms.
    • Your vet cannot refuse to do this though he is allowed to levy a 'reasonable' charge.
    • If you feel your vet is charging an unreasonable amount or you are being discriminated against for requesting a written prescription then you should contact Bob Macdowall at The Office of Fair Trading on 02072118574 or bobmacdowall@oft.gov.uk
    • The pet in question must be under his care, so he may need to examine your pet before he can sign a prescription.
    • For pets on long term medication your vet will need to examine your pet on a sufficiently regular basis to have adequate knowledge of your pet's condition. Most vets examine pets taking long term medication on average every 3-6 months.
    • You may wish to discuss with your vet the quantity of medication he specifies in the prescription in order to maximise your saving.
