Rabbit Vaccinations

The two vaccinations rabbits require act against myxomatosis and viral haemorrhagic disease (VHD).

Myxomatosis – if contracted rabbits can be ill for a long time or even die. It is spread by blood sucking insects i.e. fleas and mosquitoes. Once bitten the virus is injected and then multiplies causing runny eyes, blindness, swollen genitals, swelling in the head, pus discharge from the nose and swollen eyes. Vaccinations can be started from 6 weeks of age. A regular booster will then be due every 6 months.

Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (VHD) – this is a deadly disease and will kill almost every rabbit that contracts the disease, which can be picked up from 6 weeks of age. The acute form can be distressing as it attacks the liver and causes severe internal bleeding. Symptoms include lethargy, collapse, convulsions, paralysis, breathing difficulties, bloody discharge from nose, jaundice and weight loss. It is very persistent and stays in the environment. House rabbits can also be affected as the disease can be carried on clothes, bedding, food bowls etc. Vaccinations can be started from 10 weeks of age and a regular booster will need to be given every year to maintain protection.
