Abbott Laboratories

Abbott Laboratories was established in 1937 in the UK in Perivale in London but have been established in the USA for more than 120 years by a doctor named Dr. C. Abbott. They employ over 72,000 people worldwide, 2000 in the UK where they are based in Maidenhead. They produce a wide range of products in both human in animal medicine including many anaesthetics and were the leading suppliers of anaesthetic to the allied forces in the Second World War. Their main veterinary products are also anaesthetics: Propoflo, an injectable agent to induce anaesthesia and Isoflo and Sevoflo, inhalational anaesthetic gases but they also produce the AlphaTRAK glucose monitor to aid in monitoring of diabetes.

Alstoe

Established in 1994, Alstoe initially produced mainly large animal medicines but have been producing small animal medicines since 1996. In 2009 they started producing diets specifically formulated veterinary diets for rabbits and guinea pigs. Their most widespread product is Vetergesic, a partial opioid painkiller with the active ingredient butorphanol. It is commonly used for analgesia (pain relief) and pre medications before anaesthetic in the UK. Animalcare

Animalcare Ltd was founded in 1998 and is part of Animalcare Group Plc, based in York. They have 11 sales representatives and launched their business in Ireland in 2006. They have over 1000 products and services including pharmaceuticals for use with large and small animals. Bayer Plc has been trading in the UK since Friedrich Bayer sold dyestuffs here in 1871. It is a German company based in Leverkusen and the UK headquarters are in Newbury, Berkshire. They employ over 109,000 people worldwide, 1,380 in the UK.  Bayer is a global company specialising in Healthcare, Material Science and Crop Science and they have over 5000 products. Boehringer Ingelheim

Boehringer is a family company started by Christian Boehringer in Germany in 1817. His grandson Albert Boehringer then started a chemical factory in Ingelheim. They have been present in the UK since 1955 with a headquarters in Bracknell in Berkshire and employ over 1000 people here. Their most prolific veterinary medicine is Metacam, a non steroidal anti inflammatory with the active ingredient meloxicam. CEVA UK is a branch of CEVA Sante Animale, a French laboratory. They have 4 research and development sites, 13 productions sites and 1760 employees. Dechra

Dechra pharmaceuticals was formed from a management buyout of Lloyds Chemist in 1997. They are a large company split into pharmaceuticals and services. The pharmaceuticals include Thyroxyl, a thyroid hormone replacement for dogs, Felimazole, a drug to control excess thyroid hormone in cats and Vetoryl, a drug to control excess steroid hormone in condition called Cushings. Schering-Plough was founded in 1851 by Ernst Schering and merged with Plough in 1971. Schering Plough then recently merged with Intervet to form one of the largest veterinary medicine companies.
