Some people have known reactions to drugs such as an allergy to Penicillin but all drugs are potentially toxic as idiosyncratic or unexpected reactions may occur. These can range from mild such as a skin irritation to more severe reactions such as carcinogenic (tumour causing) effects of drugs.
In view of this it is always recommended to wear protective clothing, particularly gloves when handling medication. It is also recommended not to eat or drink or store food and drink near medications, including medications that require refrigeration. Smoking near medications should also be avoided.
Medications should be kept in child proof containers, out of the reach of children. They should also be kept out of the reach of pets as ingesting too much of the medication at once will result in an overdose that could be dangerous. If you or any members of your family are taking any medications then they should be stored quite separately from your pet’s medications to avoid confusion as they can look very similar.
Appropriate hygiene procedures, such as thoroughly washing your hands after dealing with medications, is also advised.
